A new report reveals the impact Covid-19 has had upon technology and employee engagement in the workplace.
The survey conducted by workplace technology providers EBC Group, in conjunction with Worcestershire & Herefordshire Chamber of Commerce, revealed that at least 66% of businesses have experienced a technology issue in 2020.
Due largely to the unexpected shift to remote working, many businesses found themselves ill prepared to accommodate ‘work from home’ practises, with 85% of businesses admitting they have experienced at least one challenge as a result of remote working.
The annual Employment Report details the significant impact Covid-19 has had upon businesses and their employees, and highlights the measures that have been taken to ensure continuity within the workplace.
The report found that 78% of businesses have adopted or increased their use of at least one type of technology due to the pandemic, with 75% of businesses adopting or increasing their use of video conferencing as a main point of communication.
Ross Renton, Senior Pro Vice Chancellor (students) at the University of Worcester comments ‘Like many organisations, the lockdown changed how the University’s work was conducted and the development of technologically enabled learning was quickly accelerated.
Ross continues ‘New software was introduced, and training helped staff move to a different way of working. Academic staff found inventive ways to deliver remote learning, and staff in professional services continued vital recruitment efforts by delivering virtual open days.’
The annual Employment Report also focuses on the future of the workplace and the impact of accelerated employment trends due to COVID-19, such as the introduction of advanced technology and the increase in remote and flexible working.
31% of businesses said they intended to offer greater flexible working options moving forward, with a 58% majority intending to keep the flexible working options they currently have in place.
To accommodate these new flexible approaches, 62% of businesses are expecting their spend on technology and digital transformation to increase as a result of the pandemic.
For workplace technology providers EBC Group the challenges of 2020 have seen an increased drive in the adoption of technology due largely to remote working.
Group Managing Director, Richard Lane (Pictured) comments ‘with the initial lockdown forcing many of our clients to work from home, we saw an increased demand on our IT support desk, with 4 times the number of tickets and double the amount of phone calls from customers who found themselves in difficult working circumstances and often required immediate help.’
Richard continues ‘As people’s attitudes toward remote working change, so does the need for technology that will accommodate this new way of working. We have seen increased demand for remote working solutions, including cloud enabled technology such Microsoft teams, VoIP and video software, as well as IT Support and cyber security, as many of our clients begin to plan a new technology roadmap.’
